Inflation Nation: The BLS issued their annual season adjustments to its weighting of their “basket” of items it tracks. It was not significant enough to impact pricing trends.
The end of a quiet week or interest rates. Fed officials all week essentially saying the same thing with different takes, the Fed will wait until there is clearer evidence inflation is not going to rebound after declining in 2023. This morning’s annual CPI revisions were a concern after last year’s revisions shocked with higher inflation than had been reported, this go round was in line with what had been reported in the monthly data.
Interest rates increased this week, driven by those Fed officials’ comments. The DJIA generally unchanged, NASDAQ and S&P improved. For a week, the news centered on whether the S&P would move above 5,000, the index spent a few days testing the level until today when broke higher. Comments through the week from Wall Street, hedge funds and money managers increased the outlook of a soft landing and no recession. Treasury completed its quarterly refunding with strong demands for 3 year, 10 year notes and 30 year bond auctions. There was little economic data of consequence, the one exception was the Jan ISM service sector data, the index increased more than what was expected rattling after last Friday’ very strong employment report drove rates higher (the 10 year note increased 16 bps to 4.03%), from last Friday the 10 year note added another 14 bp increase. In perspective, from a week ago yesterday the 10 year note yield has increased 33 bps.
Next Week’s Calendar: Monday Jan Treasury budget. Tuesday Jan CPI. Wednesday MBA mortgage applications. Thursday weekly claims, Jan retail sales, Jan import and export prices, NY Empire State manufacturing index, Feb Philly Fed business index, Jan industrial production and capacity utilization, Feb NAHB housing market index. Friday Jan housing starts and permits, Jan PPI, U. of Michigan consumer sentiment index. The week is going to experience an increase in volatility. Technically, the 10 year note in danger of breaching 4.20%, a key resistance for the 10.
This week: 10 year note yield increased 14 bps, the 2 year note +11 b ps. FNMA 6.0 30 year coupon price fell 35 bps. The DJIA +18, NASDAQ +362, S&P +68. Gold declined $15.00, crude oil increased on mid-east tensions, +4.42/barrel. The dollar had a quirt week, the index increased 0.16. Bitcoin exploded, increasing 4,567.
Saw a clip today, the cost of a six pack related to the ad prices for Sunday’s Super Bowl would be $340.00 from ad prices in 1967.
